Cazorla set to undergo medical at emirate for a fee around £18m deal

Malaga have confirmed midfielder Santi Cazorla has not attended training today amid reports he’s on his way to London to undergo a medical with Arsenal.

With Robin van Persie poised to leave, the capture of Cazorla, 27, is the major signing of the summer that Arsene Wenger has been promising.

Wenger was beaten to the signature of the Spain midfielder last year by Malaga, who had been seemingly enriched by their purchase by Qatari Sheik Abdullah Bin Nasser Al-Thani.

But the club now have to clear huge debts by the end of the month or face relegation to Spain's second tier, the loss of their UEFA licence and Champions League expulsion.

Adding Cazorla to the signings of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud represents the most significant summer strengthening since Arsenal imposed financial constraints on transfers in 2004.

Former Arsenal Player Martin Keown praise Podolski's level of experience

Martin Keown believes Arsène Wenger has got it right this summer with the signings of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

The duo will join their new team-mates this week after the conclusion of the Club’s pre-season tour of Asia.

Keown played 449 times for Arsenal in two spells between 1981 and 2004 and insists the experience of Podolski in particular will prove invaluable as the Gunners look to build on last season’s third-place finish.

“Podolski has come in with an undisputable amount of experience,” Keown told Arsenal.com at the launch of The Arsenal Brent Cross. “He had a quiet Euros playing in a wide position, so it will be interesting to see where the manager will play him.

“But he is an outstanding player and that is the level of experience we need.

“We have seen Giroud in flashes and it looks like he has got great qualities too. If Wenger is taking him you can be sure he is going to be a top player. So there are lots of plusses.”

Arsenal chairman Hill-Wood wondering why Van Persie wants to move

The Dutch striker is continuing to try and force a move away from the Emirates Stadium, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus all vying for his attention

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has confessed he is baffled as to why Robin van Persie would want to leave the club.

The 28-year-old striker finished as top scorer in the Premier League last season and confirmed his intention to part ways with the Gunners earlier in July, which has started a transfer pursuit between Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus.

However, the Emirates Stadium chairman insisted that Van Persie will not be sold on the cheap.

“He is a world-class player and we don’t want to give him away,” Hill-Wood told the Daily Star.

“If he is determined to leave that is up to him, but giving him away is not on our agenda.

“To be honest I do not understand him at all. I understood Cesc Fabregas wanting to go home to Barcelona last summer. I had sympathy with that.

“But I thought Robin was happy at Arsenal, especially after the season he had with us.”

Van Persie has been part of the Gunners' squad since 2004 and was given the captain’s armband on a permanent basis after Fabregas left last summer.

Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud have already been brought in to the club recently, while Santi Cazorla is a reported £16 million target for the Gunners.

OFFICIAL: Chelsea FC announce the signing of Oscar

Chelsea have completed the signing of Internacional midfielder Oscar.

The Blues confirmed the deal on their official website on Wednesday having verbally agreed the transfer, according to the Brazilian club's president, Giovanni Luigi, earlier in the week.

No details have been released regarding the player's transfer fee or contract, but reports had claimed that the playmaker would cost around £25 million.

Oscar is currently representing Brazil at the Olympic Games and played in the Selecao's pre-tournament warm-up friendly against Great Britain.

Thorgan Hazard Unite brother Eden Hazard at Chelsea

Chelsea have signed Lens teenage midfielder Thorgan Hazard who joins his older brother Eden at the European champions, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

He joined Lens aged 14 and moved up to the senior squad last season, making 14 Ligue 1 appearances including his debut as a substitute in the first match of the campaign.

Thorgan has played for Belgium at several age groups and was part of the squad for the 2011 European Under-19 Championship.

He will join Chelsea's Under-21 squad for pre-season training with a loan move being considered so he can continue his development, according to the club's official website.

The Hazards, whose parents were footballers, were both at Belgian team Tubize and could join a long list of brothers to play for Chelsea including Ray and Graham Wilkins, Ron and Allan Harris, John and Peter Sillett and Chris and William Ferguson.

Thierry Henry Arsenal Future Coach?

New York Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry is not ruling out the possibility of sealing another return to Arsenal.

Henry, 34, spent time training with Arsenal during the off season of the MLS last winter before agreeing a short-term loan agreement in January with the club he left for Barcelona.

The Frenchman scored twice during his loan spell, his first of those strikes on his comeback match in the FA Cup against Leeds, and he has admitted he sees his future back at Emirates Stadium.

Henry said in the Sun: "I would like to go back to England with Arsenal for sure.

"I wasn't planning to go back to play last season. It was only because Gervinho and Chamakh went to the African Nations Cup.

"I was there to train and they asked me if I wanted to play. Who knows what might happen in the future? I've not yet spoken to Arsene about it so I don't know what capacity I could go back in.

"Coaching does interest me but I don't know what my talent is going to be after I have finished my career. But I will go back to Arsenal."

Cazorla Set to Sign for Arsenal

Arsenal are edging close to signing of malaga midfielder Santi Cazorla after he agreed terms with the club.

The versatile spain player looks set to complete a move to north London in the coming weeks, a year after first being pursued by Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners have tabled a bid of around £15.6million for one of La Liga's brightest talents and hope that any deal can be concluded swiftly considering the player's desire to move.

Cazorla joined Malaga last summer from Villarreal and the financial situation of the club is so bad that can lead them to relegate with a hefty tax bill owing the spanish government and number of unfulfilled obligations on transfer repayment.

Cazorla, who scored four freekicks last season, played in almost every position across the midfield and attack, and would be the third addition to the forward ranks this summer, after Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

Walcott Next to Extend Contract

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott insists he knows nothing of rumours linking him with an exit from Arsenal this summer, with talks over a new contract ongoing.
Walcott, 23, is currently on tour with Arsenal in Malaysia, which kicks off on Tuesday afternoon, and told reporters that he is not worried about his contractual situation.

The England winger's current deal at Emirates Stadium expires next summer, meaning he would be free to walk away for nothing if an extension cannot be agreed.

"I didn't have a clue about [the speculation]. I'm just an honest guy and I like to get on with my job. I don't want distractions. Like I say my agent and the club will continue to talk and when there is something to know I will get involved."

Walcott was an important member of Arsenal's first-team in the 2011-12 season, scoring eight goals in 35 league appearances.

Koscielny agrees new contract

Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that Laurent Koscielny has agreed to sign a new long-term contract.

The 26-year-old centre back has established himself as one of Arsenal's most consistent performers since arriving from Ligue 1 side Lorient in the summer of 2010. No other player has started more games for the Club - 85 - over the past two seasons.

Best known for his defensive qualities, the France International has also contributed some important goals for Arsenal, with his most recent - the winner against West Bromwich Albion on the final day of last season - securing the Gunners' qualification into the 2012/13 Champions League.

Koscielny's fine form for Arsène Wenger's team earned him a call-up to the France squad last year. He has now won four caps for his country, including playing the full 90 minutes of Les Bleus' defeat to Spain in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 last month.

Manager Arsène Wenger said: "Laurent has been outstanding for us over the last two seasons. When you consider that until 2009 he was playing in Ligue 2 in France and that he is now performing at the very top level in the Premier League and for his country, the development that he has shown has been absolutely exceptional. Laurent is a top-class player and I am very pleased he has decided to commit his future to the Club."

Laurent said: "I'm delighted to have reached agreement with the Club. I have had a fantastic time here and look forward to an exciting future with Arsenal."

Everyone at Arsenal Football Club looks forward to Laurent's continued contribution in the forthcoming years.

Chelsea agree deal to sign Oscar, claims Internacional president

After the attacking midfielder himself claiming to have previously undergone a medical at Stamford Bridge, confirmation of the young star's move now appears imminent

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Internacional midfielder Oscar, according the Brazilian club’s president, Giovanni Luigi.

The 20-year-old, who is currently in England on Olympics duty with the Selecao and was a standout performer in their 2-0 warm-up victory over Team GB, claimed on Friday that he had undergone a medical at Stamford Bridge but would delay any decision on his future until after the conclusion of the Games.

However, it now appears that confirmation of a switch is imminent with Luigi claiming that a verbal agreement has been finalised between the two clubs.

"There is a verbal agreement between the two parties. But we have to put that on paper and the lawyer of both clubs have to discuss the matter," the official told Radio Guiaba.

Oscar joined Internacional from Sao Paulo in 2009, and scored a hat-trick in Brazil’s Under-20 World Cup final victory over Portugal.

Premier League rivals Tottenham have also been linked with a move for the €32 million-rated youngster as a potential replacement for midfield schemer Luka Modric, who is reportedly on the verge of a move to La Liga champions Real Madrid.

Van Persie pulls out of Arsenal tour to force Manchester City move

The club captain will not travel with the squad to Malaysia this weekend leaving the champions favourites to sign him, with Manchester United having not bid for the Dutch striker

Van Persie has raised the stakes as he goes head to head with Arsenal in his battle to quit the club.

Manager Arsene Wenger is believed to have reluctantly accepted Van Persie’s position and the 28-year-old will remain at London Colney next week to train with the club’s academy and reserve players and the more established men who will be left behind to recover from injury such as Jack Wilshere, Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Frimpong.

Contrary to widespread reports that Manchester United have made an official bid for the striker, it is understood that this is not the case and that the Old Trafford club have instead prioritised the signing of Brazilian playmaker Lucas Moura, and are also pursuing Real Madrid star Nuri Sahin

Sources have said that United’s neighbours Man City are in pole position to sign van Persie and that a lucrative package is in place to take the reigning PFA player of the year to Etihad Stadium.

Despite van Persie reiterating his stance that he wants to quite Arsenal before the transfer window closes and effectively going on strike, the club are ready to stick to their strategy of holding him to his contract, which expires in 11 months.

The north Londoners have calculated the striker will have less chance of being awarded a lucrative, four-year contract next year from one of his suitors because of his age – he turns 30 in August 2013 - and chequered injury history.

Van Persie and his representatives have calculated that they will force Arsenal into a sale by pushing even harder for a transfer than the likes of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas.

The Dutchman delivered a bombshell with the statement via his own website on July 4, which effectively said he wanted to leave because he disagreed with Wenger and the board of directors "in many aspects … on the way Arsenal should move forward".

He also announced that he would not extend his contract before it expires next June.

Van Persie has risked tarnishing his legacy with Arsenal fans following his remarkable performances of the 2011-2012 season, when he scored 37 goals and inspired the team to third in the Premier League after a disastrous start to the campaign.

Arsenal fly to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, for their three-match pre-season tour of Asia, which also takes in Beijing and Hong Kong. Arsenal play Man City at Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium on Friday of next week.

Chelsea in discussions with Wigan over Moses move

Roberto Di Matteo has admitted that he hopes to bring the 'young and interesting prospect' to Stamford Bridge but conceded that he may have to trim his squad before the new season

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has revealed that Blues are in discussions with Wigan Athletic regarding the possible transfer of Nigerian forward Victor Moses.
According to Latics chairman Dave Whelan, the Blues have already had three bids rejected for the player.

However, Moses only has a year left remaining on his contract at the DW Stadium and Wigan could risk losing him for nothing should he decide to see out the remainder of his contract.

"[It's] something that the clubs are discussing but at the moment he is a Wigan player," he told reporters.

"He had a good season last season, he is young and an interesting prospect."

Chelsea have been linked with several big-name players this summer but Di Matteo is also looking to offload players and sees pre-season as the perfect opportunity to evaluate his squad.

"We cannot name more than 25 players in the squad so we will have to make some decisions,” Di Matteo added.

"Pre-season gives me a great opportunity to look at the new players and see how they develop. The final decision on who will go and who will stay will be made at the beginning of August."

The Blues manager was impressed by new signing and goal scorer Eden Hazard in Chelsea's opening game of their tour of the United States against Seattle Sounders, which they won 4-2.

"Hazard is a versatile player," he added. "He can play in a role behind or out wide and last season we didn't have too many options apart from Juan [Mata] so it is great for the club to have different options."

Tottenham defender Ledley King announces retirement

Tottenham defender Ledley King has retired from professional football but will remain at Spurs as an ambassador.

The former England international, 31, has struggled with injuries for a number of years and has been unable to train on a daily basis.

"Sadly my injuries and inability to train have finally brought an end to my career," King told Tottenham's website.

Spurs have announced that a testimonial will take place at the end of the 2012-13 season for King,  who spent his entire playing career with the London club after joining as a trainee.

After his debut in 1999, King went on to make 264 league appearances, winning the Carling Cup in 2008, and was club captain.

The centre-back also represented England 21 times and was in the 2010 World Cup squad.

"I have been here since I was a boy," added King, whose career was blighted by knee problems. "It is like a second home to me.

On his new ambassadorial role, King said: "I am pleased that I can continue to work within the club and for the local community, especially after the devastation caused by the riots last year.

"I am already heavily involved with the work of Spurs Foundation and the new stadium scheme will be a major factor in the regeneration of the area, so I am delighted that I shall be part of that."

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy described King as "one of the most gifted players in the history of the club".

"It is testament to the character of the man how he managed to sustain such high standards of performance on the pitch, while providing such fine leadership."

"I would like to say thank you to everyone at the club and to the fans.

Theo Walcott to beat out his Arsenal future in imminent contract talks

Theo Walcott will hold fresh contract talks with Arsenal as he prepares to take his place on the club’s tour of Asia that begins on Saturday.
The England international returns to pre-season training today or tomorrow following his summer break and is expected to then thrash out his future with the club.
Walcott will be on the flight to Kuala Lumpur that leaves on Saturday for the first leg of the club’s Asia tour, although it is not yet guaranteed that he will be joined on the plane by Arsenal’s other high-profile contract rebel, Robin van Persie.
It is understood that discussions will swiftly take place with senior officials, including manager Arsene Wenger, about breaking Walcott’s contract stalemate.
The north Londoners have put together a four-year package for the 23-year-old in a bid to tie him down beyond the summer of 2013, when his current agreement expires.
But contract talks have not progressed since two informal meetings last December and Walcott is believed to be seeking personal assurances from Wenger about where he fits into the manager's plans.
There is no suggestion at this stage that Walcott, who currently earns £60,000 per week, wants to leave Arsenal this summer.
Although the England international has refused to publicly discuss his future beyond this season or accept several opportunities to express his desire to stay at Arsenal, it is believed that he is happy at Emirates Stadium and very settled in the south-east.
The winger established himself as an undisputed first-team regular last season, starting 29 of Arsenal’s first 32 Premier League matches and only succumbing to injury in the final weeks of the season when he tore his hamstring. He was the club’s second leading scorer behind Van Persie, weighing in with 11 goals in all competitions. It is understood that Arsenal are not willing to increase their package for Walcott beyond £80,000-a-week.
The player, who joined Arsenal as a 16-year-old in 2006, believes he could be on a similar salary to many of his fellow England internationals of around £100,000-a-week.
Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool are among the English clubs monitoring Walcott’s contract talks, while Juventus head a queue of admirers from Italy and Spain, although none have yet been given encouragement to make a serious move.

Sweden International: 80 caps – 33 goals – International debut 31 January 2001

OFFICIALLY: Ibrahimovic signs 3-year deal with PSG!

Paris Saint-Germain have annouced that they have completed the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from AC Milan for an udisclosed fee.
The Sweden international who signed a three-year contract which will keep him at the Parc des Princes until 2015, with the French capital club spending a reported €23 million fee for the striker.
Questioned about the move, Ibrahimovic has no doubt that he has taken a step forward in his career and stressed that he is not only thinking about the money, amidst reports that he will earn €13m per year at the club.
"I wanted to thank PSG and [sporting director] Leonardo for their work, they made the impossible possible," Ibrahimovic told reporters at a press conference.
"This is another step in my career, another dream that has come true. This has been a massive thing in the media, people chasing me in my home. This is not normal, I will chase them back.
"This is a very interesting project, a project I wanted to be a part of, and I had no doubts in my mind when they contacted my agent.
"I want to make history with this club. I have come here to win, not for anything else."
When his current deal with PSG expires, Ibrahimovic will be almost 34 years old, and the Swedish ace does not rule out the possibility of retiring at the French club.
"As it looks today, it will be final contract," he added. "Today I am here and I hope to be here for all the time that I have signed for.
"All I am thinking about is winning and how that will happen.
"I consider PSG to be at the same level as the other clubs I have played for. With the likes of [Marco] Verratti, we have the future as well.
"I do not know a lot about Ligue 1 and its players. Whoever we play against, we will play to win. For sure, I will learn who they are, and they know who I am."
Ibrahimovic joins PSG after two successful seasons at Milan in which he scored 56 goals in all competitions, and the 30-year-old thanked the Italian club for allowing him to kick-start his career following a disappointing spell at Barcelona.
"The only thing I have to say about Milan is that I was happy there, they put a smile on my face again," the striker noted.
"They will always remain in my heart because they helped me an my family.
"They will continue to succeed, they did it with me, and they will do it without me. I have nothing negative to say about Milan because that is not like me.
"I leave Italy because the future is here. What happens in italy is not my concern. Without me and Thiago Silva, Serie A will be poorer."
Ibrahimovic, who also had spells at Ajax, Juventus and Inter, has become the fourth summer signing of the Ligue 1 runners-up, following the transfers of Ezequiel Lavezzi, Thiago Silva and Marco Verratti.
"With Zlatan, we are done in the transfer market this year," Leonardo said. "He is the perfect recruitment."

Ibrahimovic is a Paris Saint-Germain player says Leonardo

The highly-rated striker is on the verge of completing a move to the Parc des Princes,
with the 30-year-old expected to be formally unveiled by the club on Wednesday
Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has confirmed that AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has agreed to join the Ligue 1 club.

The Sweden international's agent has spent the last few days in the French capital trying to work out a transfer after the Rossoneri agreed to sell the 30-year-old and team-mate Thiago Silva to PSG.

Italian reports suggest that Ibrahimovic has agreed to a €13 million-a-year deal with the French outfit, with the player's transfer costing PSG €23m.

"We have reached an agreement, the deal is done," Leonardo told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a PSG player, he can write our history."

Ibrahimovic's agent Mino Raiola spoke to reporters outside of PSG's headquarters on Tuesday, saying: "Everyone is happy, and so is Zlatan.

"With the arrival of Ibra, Paris now has another reason to be considered a city filled with beauty."

Meanwhile, PSG have called a press conference for Wednesday in which Leonardo and president Nasser Al Khelaifi will be in attendance.

It is believed that the purpose of the press conference is to present not only Ibrahimovic, who touched down at Bouget airport on Tuesday evening, but also teenage playmaker Marco Verratti, who has joined the capital city side from Pescara.

Tottenham face competition for Adebayor

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor on a permanent basis are under threat from Lokomotiv Moscow, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Adebayor spent last season on loan at White Hart Lane, scoring 18 goals in 38 games, and new Spurs Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas had looked set to make the former Arsenal forward his third signing of the summer, after the capture of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen.

However, Adebayor is attracting admiring glances from Lokomotiv Moscow, who could be ready to scupper Spurs’ deal for the 28-year-old with an £8m bid of their own. Tottenham had agreed a fee with City for the player but talks over a contract are still on-going, as Spurs must find a way to meet Adebayor’s financial demands even if they cannot match his £175,000 per week wages.

Lokomotiv, managed by former Croatia Coach Slaven Bilic, are said to be willing and able to pay Adebayor the same sum he currently receives from City, potentially giving them the edge in the battle for the Togolese’s signature.

GUNNERS CARLOS VELA AGREED TO JOIN REAL SOCIEDAD

Carlos Vela has agreed to join Spanish side Real Sociedad on a permanent deal, bringing an end to his seven-year stay with Arsenal.

Mexico striker Vela was on loan at Sociedad last season, making 35 appearances and scoring 12 goals to finish the campaign as top scorer for the Spanish side.

Vela, 23, has found his first-team opportunities in the Premier League limited and the Gunners granted the forward permission to negotiate a move to La Liga.

"Arsenal Football Club has announced that striker Carlos Vela is in San Sebastian this evening for final discussions about a permanent move to Spanish La Liga side Real Sociedad," read a statement on Arsenal's official website.

"The 23-year old Mexican international spent the whole of 2011/12 on loan with the Spanish club and enjoyed a successful campaign in La Liga. Vela made his Arsenal debut in 2008 and has made 62 appearances, scoring 11 goals."

Vela, who has previously played on loan at Salamanca, Osasuna and West Bromwich Albion, is expected to put the final touches to a four-year deal after Sociedad declared the striker had "come home"

ARSENAL AGREE STRIKER DEAL BUT FACE COMPETITION

It was understand that Arsenal have agreed a fee with Caen for hot-shot M'Baye Niang, but face competition from Manchester City for his signature.

Highly-rated forward Niang enjoyed a trial at Arsenal last week and he is thought to have impressed during his time at London Colney.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has held a long-term interest in the 17-year-old and he has firmed up his interest with a bid.

Caen are resigned to losing Niang following their relegation from Ligue 1 and a host of clubs have expressed an interest in signing the teenager.

Arsenal are hoping to steal a march on their Premier League rivals by agreeing a deal with Caen for the player.

However, City have now joined the chase and they are believed to have asked Caen if they can take him to the Etihad Stadium on trial.

If City agree a deal with Caen, Niang will have a decision on what club he wants to join as he looks set to seal a move to England in the near future.

RVP returns today to emirate

Robin van Persie returns to Arsenal on Monday following his summer break and Sky Sports understands he will hold talks with the club.

However, there is no indication that Van Persie's stance over a new contract has changed - as he awaits further developments on his future.

Juventus, Manchester City and Manchester United all maintain an interest in landing the coveted signature of the Dutchman - who has a year left on his current deal.

Arsenal would seemingly be loath to be dragged into another situation similar to that of Samir Nasri last summer, and it is believed they would rather a deal be done sooner rather than later.

Arsenal are due to depart for a pre-season tour of the Far East this weekend, and it remains to be seen whether their captain will be involved or if the situation over his future moves on in the coming days.

Van Persie revealed earlier month that he would not be extending his contract with Arsenal, due to disagreements on how the club should move forward.

Official: Galatasaray snap Hamit Altintop from Real Madrid

The Turkey international pens a four-year deal at the Turk Telekom Arena to finally complete his protracted move to Istanbul and end his unhappy spell in the Spanish capital

The 29-year-old only joined Los Blancos last summer on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, but a mix of injuries and failure to earn a first-team spot saw him appear just five times in La Liga, scoring once.

Accordingly, he has decided to move on rather than wait for his chance under Jose Mourinho, and will now prepare for his maiden spell in Turkey, having never previously played in the country of his descent.

According to Gala's official website, Hamit, also formerly of Schalke, has agreed a four-year contract, earning €2.9m for the first two years and €2.75m for the latter.

Hamit's becomes Galatasaray's third signing of the summer, following the footsteps of Umut Bulut and Dany Nounkeu. Meanwhile, the club are working hard to bring in Trabzonspor's in-demand forward Burak Yilmaz.

Paris Saint-Germain complete €42m signing of Thiago Silva from AC Milan

The Brazilian defender has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the French giants after negotiations between the two clubs finally reached a conclusion on Saturday

Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Thiago Silva from AC Milan on their official website, with the fee reported to be in the region of €42 million.

The Brazil international, 27, had been linked with a move to the Parc des Princes throughout the summer, and he has now made the switch to the French capital, where he is expected to be joined by his former Milan team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

He has agreed a five-year contract worth a reported €7.5m per year, including €1.5m in bonuses, and becomes the second most expensive defender in the world after Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand.

After previous failed spells in Europe with Dynamo Moscow and Porto, Thiago Silva returned to the continent from Fluminense in 2009 and lifted the Serie A title in only his second season at San Siro.

Although the side were unable to retain their Scudetto crown the following campaign, he appeared to have committed his long-term future to the Rossoneri, having penned a five-year extension at the end of June.

However, with Milan's financial problems well documented, president Silvio Berlusconi confirmed that he had accepted a bid from PSG in the region of €65 million for both the Brazilian and Ibrahimovic, despite the Ligue 1 runners-up seeing an initial bid for the stopper rejected.

But while the deal to bring in the Swede remains incomplete, Thiago Silva is now officially a PSG player and will join up with former coach Leonardo, as well as many ex-Serie A rivals, including Thiago Motta, Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

John Terry cleared of racism against Anton Ferdinand

John Terry leaves court after being cleared of racially abusing Mr Ferdinand

Ex-England captain John Terry has been cleared of racially abusing fellow footballer Anton Ferdinand.

The Chelsea and England defender had denied making the comments to the Queens Park Rangers player during a match at Loftus Road last October.

The 31-year-old told Westminster Magistrates' Court he was merely repeating what he thought Mr Ferdinand had said to him as they traded insults.

The FA has said its inquiry into the incident will resume next week.

Mr Terry had described himself as "angry and upset" over the claims.

It was alleged he had insulted Mr Ferdinand in a Premier League match, describing him as "black" and using extreme sexual swear words

Chief Magistrate Howard Riddle said he had heard a great deal of evidence to show Mr Terry was not a racist.

In his written judgement, he said that after weighing the evidence it was "highly unlikely" that Mr Terry abused Mr Ferdinand in the manner he was accused of.

Mr Riddle went on: "The prosecution evidence as to what was said by Mr Ferdinand at this point is not strong.

"It is therefore possible that what he [Mr Terry] said was not intended as an insult, but rather as a challenge to what he believed had been said to him.

"In those circumstances, there being a doubt, the only verdict the court can record is one of not guilty."

Mr Terry did not deny using the word "black" and swearing at Mr Ferdinand.

His defence was that he had thought Mr Ferdinand was accusing him of using the words, and was simply repeating them when he was caught on camera.

He was backed in court by Chelsea team mate Ashley Cole.

Mr Terry, who was widely seen as one of England's best players in this summer's European Championship, jerked his head downwards as the verdict was given.

There were cheers in court from his supporters.

He did not comment to the waiting media as he left court but his lawyer, Dan Morrison, said outside: "The court has today acquitted John Terry of all charges.

"He did not racially abuse Anton Ferdinand, and the court has accepted this."

Following the verdict, an FA spokesman said: "The FA notes the decision in the John Terry case and will now seek to conclude its own inquiries."

Bruce Buck, chairman of Chelsea Football Club, said: "Chelsea Football Club notes and, of course, we respect the decision of the magistrate today.

"We are pleased John can now put his mind to football, go back to training and do what he has been doing for many years."

Anton Ferdinand is on the way to Hong Kong with his QPR team mates for a pre-season tour.

Leaving court, his father Julian Ferdinand told waiting reporters: "I have nothing to say to you at all."

Elaborating on his judgement, Mr Riddle said Mr Ferdinand was brave to give evidence, calling him a "believable witness".

He explained that it was not for him to decide whether Mr Terry was a racist, and that his only role was to ascertain whether the offence was carried out.

Mr Riddle said that any discrepancies in his account were "understandable and natural".

He also said it was understandable that Mr Terry was so keen to argue he does not hold racist beliefs, adding: "His reputation is at stake."

Alison Saunders, Chief Crown Prosecutor for London, defended the decision to bring the case to trial.

She said: "The very serious allegation at the heart of this case was one of racial abuse.

"It was our view that this was not banter on the football pitch and that the allegation should be judged by a court."

Ms Saunders pointed out that the magistrate agreed Mr Terry had a case to answer when his defence moved to have the prosecution thrown out earlier in the week.

Of the subsequent acquittal, she added: "That is justice being done and we respect the chief magistrate's decision."

The case led to Mr Terry being stripped of the England captaincy by the Football Association.

England manager Fabio Capello then resigned in protest.

John Terry will hear his fate on charges of racism today

JOHN TERRY should be sacked by Chelsea if he is found guilty today in his race charge trial.

That is the view of the chairman of his own union.

Clarke Carlisle, chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association, said last night that Terry should be treated as he would be in any other walk of life. That means he should have been suspended from his job as soon as the allegation of abusing someone else “in the workplace” was made.

And it meant that, if guilty, Terry should be dismissed by his employers, said Carlisle.

Chelsea and former England captain Terry expects the verdict today, the fifth day of his trial on a charge of racially abusing Queen’s Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a match between the two clubs last October.

Carlisle said: “Do I think football should conform to the rules and regulations of every other work place? Yes.

“In any other walk of life he would have been suspended once the allegation was made. If John Terry is found guilty, it will be interesting to see if anyone has the cojones to bring football into line with the rest of the working world, because it would have to sweep through the whole game.”

Asked whether that would mean sacking Terry if he is convicted, Carlisle said: “Yes, it should.”

The match which spawned the allegation against Terry, who denies the charge, was just eight days after the Luis Suarez affair erupted.

The cases provoked Carlisle to investigate racism in football for a TV documentary to be broadcast on Monday.
